» kenwindsor - Thanks

I am a CE writing on Photography. Today I have a day off work and I am going to visit some relatives, and was told last night to expect to see a bad change in my uncle who has AZ.
Checking out the new topics on Suite101 I saw yours - and it gave me valuable information to prepare myslef for todays visit.
It is not also devastating for sufferers and carers, but also a frightening thought for all of us who may at some time in the future be affected.

Is there any research which shows that keeping your mind active (like using home pc's) as we grow older will help to keep the problem at bay - or is it something we cannot as individuals actually do anything about.

Thanks again for such a timely subject.

Ken,

I'm sorry about your uncle. I'm glad my article was helpful.

There have been a lot of news articles about how keeping active may help. I've got some of them posted on my Alzheimer's in the News page at:

http://www.zarcrom.com/users/yeartorem/a...

I think that I've seen that in the people I've met online who have early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Along with the medication they take, I think that keeping active and involved on the Internet may been helping them to be able to still do far more than they would be able to otherwise.

Thank you for posting and for your kind words about my article.

» Red - thankyou...

Brenda, thanks for sharing this information. It gives me more knowledge and has heightened my awareness of AZ.

Though I do not know anyone with AZ at this time, I have in the past. I also have several friends who have parents who suffer from this affliction. I am glad to have the added information that I have found on your topic. Keep up the good work of spreading awareness.

» Marylou4 - Huperzine

I heard about huperzine from a Christian doctor who is into natural products. It sounds interesting and promising to me. Sorry I don't have a particular web sight to look at. I hope this helps.

I'm sorry for not responding sooner. I thought I was to be emailed a copy of every message posted here but apparently not.

It may be that your husband was/is suffering from the effects of stress from all he's been through. Maybe it's just temporary. I hope so. The tests should rule out any other possibilities before a diagnosis of Alzheimer's is made.

In response to message posted by Marylou4:

I would be careful about supplements and herbs like this. I've just found this statement on a doctor's Web site:
"CAUTION
High doses of huperzine may be toxic. Due to its strong anticholinesterase activity, huperzine could cause a cholinergic reaction. Side effects could include sweating, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and cramps."

I would say don't try self-medicating. Use only prescription medications that have been tested and proven.
