» Rose2 - Lest we forget IN FLANDERS FIELDSIn Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. The plan was for the Allies to attack and take the Gallipoli Peninsula, on Turkey's Aegean coast, from which point the Allies believed they could take control of the Dardanelles - a 67 kilometre (42 mile) strait which connects the Aegean Sea with the Sea of Marmara - and lay siege to Turkey's main city, Istanbul (then Constantinople). -- posted by robertquest

Rob, From this old Yank Thanks for the reminder! I usually manage to get something up in the Garden COI calendar, but immersed in family affairs, I've let the calendar languish a bit. One of the most horric films my husband and I have seen was "Gallipoli." It surely brought the terrors of war home to roost. Superb as it is, the new American made-for-TV series Band of Brothers doesn't hold a candle to "Gallipoli." Georgene (AKA Cercis) -- posted by Georgene A. Bramlage
