Himalayan Plant Journal

Primulaceae Books, publishers of The Himalayan Plant Journal, are looking to enrol 500 subscribers in order to consider reviving this excellent publication.
The Alpine Garden is keen to support this initiative and is happy to act as a co-ordinator for any interested parties.

I will be pleased to receive e-mails suggesting your interest in subscribing to the journal. Expressing an interest does not, at this stage commit you to any undertaking. It is merely an indication that will allow Primulaceae Books to make a value judgement on whether to go ahead or not. At the time of writing, I do not have details of the expected cost of this publication but I will post this as soon as it becomes available to me.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In order to keep you updated of Primulaceae Books' decision, the subscription list will be closed on 30th April 1999. However, if the requisite number of subscriptions have been registered before that time, then one would expect the publishers to honour their commitment to publish the journal.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All enquiries, statements of interest, etc,. via e-mail to The Alpine Garden.......with the subject heading HIMALAYAN PLANT JOURNAL please.

PLANTING SCHEMES FOR TROUGH GARDENS
a joint venture with the Alpine & Rock Garden Resources Web Site of Duncan McAlpine

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

INTRODUCTION
This guy Duncan McAlpine, who taught me everything I know, decided in his infinite wisdom that I obviously needed more practice...and so, he asked me to come up with a page on planting schemes to complement our respective sites on trough gardening. Never one to resist a challenge (or the work that goes with it), I thought if that will help our visitors (I hate that word...what would you prefer to be called? "Readers", "Viewers", "Guests"?)...then why not? So for your enjoyment, experimentation and comments, there follows a few suggestions for planting out your troughs.

Hypertufa
by Mike Bartolone

Hypertufa is a cast "rock-like" material which can be used for relatively inexpensive bonsai pots and slabs for plantings. It looks like rock, can be cast into almost any shape, is very lightweight and also strong enough to withstand the freeze/thaw cycle of most northern climates. The American Rock Garden Society uses the following basic recipe to create alpine troughs. They can be textured anywhere from very smooth to a rough rocky look for a "natural pot".

» Liz__OZ - because of Gary

Because of Gary, I have made my first Hypertufa pot. Much easier to do than I thought.

Narcissus rupicola
Dear Gary,
will these grow in the open ground here with me, remembering my dry heat?
best regards, Rita

» Gary - Hi Rita

Hi Rita,

these will do fine for you there in open ground.

Narcissus rupicola is a good performer, plant some. Garry Reid is the closest seller of these to you and his prices are fair.

cheers - Gary.
