» sam22 - Zambezi canoe magic It seems the river can provide a totally different experience depending on the time of year you visit! My canoe safari down the Zambezi (leaving from Kariba Dam) was amid fast flowing, very high water. The Hippos were well covered and seemingly happy - we saw lots but they didn't cause us any trouble. The crocs at eye level as the bank was only about one foot above the water at all times. We even had one croc swim under our canoe - the heart stopped beating for a time. Elephants and buffalos a plenty came down to the water to drink without any worries about us splashing past. The birdlife was spectacular. My safari was in June - to see the solar eclipse across from Mana Pools National Park on June 21, 2001. It was a perfect clear day - the most incredible natural event I have ever seen. During my visit to Southern Africa I did three overland safaris - the karibu canoe safari (5 days) was by far the best in terms of guiding, experience, service and food. If you visit Southern Africa - you really should take a trip down the Zambezi! -- posted by sam22
