It is so seldom that words like Lily's and Mabel's can be so clearly heard. This is a fascinating article based on the correspondence. I would have enjoyed the author's perspective on Sibusisiwe Makhanya's role.

You're right. I neglected to add that perspective. Sometimes, it feels like she's an afterthought in the book. But she's really not, because Lily also sought approval from this African woman, and didn't receive it.
