The latest release of books written by African American Women Writers like Darlene Johnson, TRacie Howard, and Jacqueline Thomas use an antagonist archetype I like to call the "diva socialite". She's a professional dynamo who's either very dark skinned or extremely light skinned. She entrapps the male hero into her ambitious goal, although the man has his heart set on the other woman, our heroine. Are african american women writer's beginning to tell new stories, while breaking stereotypical barriers or is this the white plantation mistress in disguise? I would love to know your thoughts.

I like to look at it as part of the challenge facing African American female writers who have chosen to take on a new and exciting voice for African American and mainstream readers. Until the very recent past, you would not have been able to use the words 'professional dynamo' to desribe any African American female charcter in a novel, much less the heroine of a story. While aspects of their storytelling may reflect nuances that reflect everyday life,I prefer to focus on the bigger picture and the significant accomplishments these women are making exposing the world to a diverse and underepresented culture.
