» w_benefield - Lesson learned? geecheegal,Thank you. First for the comments on the Dutchman article, there are times I feel as if I might need to get some place where I can see a off-broadway play or listen to a poetry reading, maybe someday. The Thanksgiving article is a tough one to stomach when is all taken in. There is a lesson to be learned here, I wonder if anyone has learned this lesson. -- posted by w_benefield » geecheegal - Re: Lesson learned? In response to message posted by w_benefield:hey walter! i was pleased to comment on the dutcman article. i think that it should be included in literature classes and classes that delve into discussions about race at colleges and universities. i thought that this article would be tough for many to digest (pardon the pun), because we are taught the pilgrim/indian tale from day one. it has been drilled into the heads of americans for so long that it has become "truth". i don't think that too many have learned alesson from this due to the fact that 20 million turkeys are sold each november, countless children participate in school plays depicting "the first thanksgiving," and many people all over the world are still going through what native americans have had to go through. there really is truth to the phrase, "those who don't know the truth are doomed to repeat it." aiesha -- posted by geecheegal » genogeno1 - Harsh Words Very harsh words for a holiday that was officially started by Abraham Lincoln in 1863. The official holiday started in response to the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863 after President Lincoln saw 50,000 people killed in this terrible battle of the Civil War.I might add that this same war ended slavery. Maybe you should concentrate on that and be thankful for it. As for you "historical account" of Squanto, Miles Standish, and all the other cast of characters that I neither idolize, read about, adore, or otherwise care about, I am a little skeptical about your "account". I am sure that there was an equal amount of savagery to go around. -- posted by genogeno1
