Adoption Books for ChildrenRead the article this discussion is about

» ahunter - More Book Recommendations Susan, the description of A Mother For Choco, reminded me of one of my favorite books as a child called Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman? (My birth mom died when I was four, which is a reason I think I took to this book about a bird who searches for its mother.) Today I have a toy baby bird based on the book. There are other books I grew up reading that also deal with adoption. Taran Wanderer (part of the Prydian Chronicles) by Lloyd Alexander is about Taran's search for his parentage and identity. The Secret Garden by Frances Burnett is about Mary Lennox from India who moves to live with her uncle in Yorkshire after her parents die and finds a secret garden. Up a Road Slowly by Irene Hunt is about Julia who goes to live with aunt after her parents die. Meet the Austins by Madeleine L'Engle is about Maggy who lives with the Austins after her parents die and temporarily disrupts the household. Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery is a classic adoption book set in Prince Edward Island. The author also wrote other books about orphans, including Emily of New Moon, which was apparently Lucy Maud Montgomery's favorite--as well as the most autobiographical--of her books. The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Paterson is about a foster child who wants to find her own mother, but just as much wants to find love. -- posted by ahunter
