» Red - Sept. 11...

Gary,

Terrific account of where you were Sept. 11, 2001. It doesn't seem like a year since the tragedy, yet in another way it seems it was just yesterday.

Thought I'd let you know I'm using this for the feature article in the Travel Center this week.

Some of us wonder what this year's September 11 will bring. Thanks for your thoughts. Our world has changed but I, for one, still continue to live life to the fullest. What's the alternative?

I remember 9-11 more than most in this region. I was driving a staff member to the auto repair shop and heard the news on the radio. I thought that this was a replay of the old Orson Wells "War Of the Worlds" when I realized that this was not fiction, but very real. My daughter was working at the Pentagon, in the area that the plane crashed, that day. There were 15 people assigned to her office. Two of them were out at conferences. She thought that she would make a pot of coffee, when her boss asked her to come downstairs to check the security on a new computer system. When the plane crashed into the building, the 11 other people in her office were killed. My daughter was thrown across the room and her boss picked her up and told her to run as he threw her out the door. Two minutes later, that section of the building collapsed. She ran out of the room and grabbed a friend on her way. They ran to the center courtyard where they found many bodies and pieces of the plane strewn about. They received word that another plane was coming that way and were directed out of the courtyard and down into the subway tunnel. Another woman found them in the subway and brought them to her home where they could contact their families and find some kind of transportation home. To this day, they don't know who that woman was, but they are very thankful for this show of kindness. My daughter was able to contact me and let me know that she was all right. She was listed on the "Missing or Dead" list for over 5 hours. Her boss would not leave the Pentagon until he had word that she was all right.
My daughter still works at the Pentagon. This year, as part of the celebration ceremoniess for all of the work that had been done to reconstruct the Pentagon, my daughter was able to obtain tickets for us to join her. I think of all that she has been through and I am thankful that we were able to be with her to help bring some closure to this horrible event.
I have heard of many more personal stories of potential victims of 9-11. I am gratefull that my daughter and these others were not casualties as well.
I am hopeful that others will find a message of hope from this event in the coming year. I know that, as we sat beside her at her cerimony, we all found some kind of closure in the rebuilding of the Pentagon. This show of strength in our country and in our families should serve as the backbone for our nation.
Thank You.
