In response to message posted by brisbaneartist:Well, as you know, I didn't get to go, but Jon went. They had a great time. Didn't get to do any journaling since I wasn't there, but there's talk of inviting me back strictly for a nature journaling class with the kids at some point. Should be fun! There were nine or 10 children and four adults. Bren -- posted by muncrief

I had sent you the bird whistles when I meant to. This one is freeze frames. So we sneak down to the oval. Ever so verily quietly we sit down (on our bottoms) and put our hands over our eyes after a while all we can hear is birds (and tractors and machinery) but there are birds in more than one direction? Which direction can you hesr the most birds singing. When I count softly from 10 to 1 open your eyes point in the direction of the sound and freeze They like it because they get to count (leader) and because I guess it gives them some kind of structure to sneaking around bird watching. I teach them maths through art so I have to weave maths into everything they do.I guess you would realise that it is all about meditation for me. And that they understand that if you rush up to a bird welll? it will probably fly right away. What drawing implements are you taking with you? Talk soon, Jo -- posted by Jo Murphy » muncrief - Thanks for..... In response to message posted by brisbaneartist:the great ideas! I'm sure we'll use the freeze frame game this morning more than once. I'm taking the supplies for them to make "scrappy" journals, drawing pencils and some colored pencils. I will have them for a couple of hours, so we'll see how much we get done. If they really, really like it, maybe we'll get to do it more often! THanks again! I'll let you know how the day goes! We made our journal, and then the first thing we saw was a Bald Eagle!! What a great find! The next thing I knew, I looked over and our "student" was drawing the Eagle. He drew about six birds in all, and we talked a lot about identifying marks of different birds. The other adult also drew the Eagle and did a fine job I might say! I told her she should really consider doing a journal on an ongoing basis. If there had been more kids we could have played freeze frame. Maybe next time! We had a terrific time. It was cold and damp, so maybe that's what kept the other kids at home. Thanks again for the great suggestions! Bren -- posted by muncrief

The one child who showed up was already much atuned to nature, knows a lot about birds, and likes to draw. He is 8 years old. It would be hard to go wrong wouldn't it? I think I'll get myself a job like that! then the first thing we saw was a Bald Eagle!! What a great find! The next thing I knew, I looked over and our "student" was drawing the Eagle. He drew about six birds in all, and we talked a lot about identifying marks of different birds. yes. That sounds great. I like the way kids at that year level draw. That is the year level that has to know how many sides a pyramid has! If there had been more kids we could have played freeze frame. Maybe next time! That all sounds ideal. can we see the pic of the bald eagle when time permits. We don't actually have Bald eagles here!
