» PatM_6 - Good Therapy

Humbling an opinionated dog is actually good for it. I do it often.

Remember, once Gillie leaves your home he will probably be the only dog. He will be out there by himself. That is his problem, he must get over it.

Harry has been left out many times. He too has a very elevated and bossy attitude. He has spent lots of quality time out by himself.

Harry runs loose often. He goes nowhere and bothers nothing. He comes when he is called and he never goes far. Harry will, once in a while, play the "Scratch at the door and then run when it's opened" game.

What's the cure?

Not let him in. Do not even invite him to come in. Actually, I will even refuse to let him come in.

There have been a few nights when Mr Harry has begged me to let him come in. When I finally let him in, Harry is so much nicer to deal with.

Harry also was very aggressive while locked in a crate. That has now been reduced to grumbling now and then when the door is being latched.

If Harry chooses to growl, he is dragged back out of the crate and we start over. He continues to come back and start over UNTIL HE DECIDES not to growl.

Harry hates this. Too bad Harry! I just laugh at him. Harry hates that too.

But you know, Harry seldom growls any more at all.

Good for you Lynn. Gille should thank his lucky stars that you leave him out now and then. Think of it as a character builder.

» PatM_6 - For the serious Theater goer.....

Many of the people do dress up and they look so nice. There are lots of little girls that are wearing VERY fancy dresses, their hair is all done up, and they are great.

Many of the men are in suits, the boys look so clean and neat.

There are also those who choose to wear nice slacks with a dressy top. I have seen some beautiful sweaters and blouses.

A few choose to wear plain jeans and an everyday shirt. Those are thankfully in the minority.

I am sure whatever you choose will be just fine. We will also stop somewhere and eat, either before or after the play.

Jammy the Star will sit in the car and wait. This will be such great fun.

Hmmm...time to go out and buy some new hose! :-) This will be fun. :-) I am really looking forward to it!

I told Scott I am coming this weekend...he said, "But we were supposed to go Christmas Shopping this weekend!" In the background, I heard Tony say, "Shopping on the weekend? Are you NUTS?!" I suggested we go tomorrow night instead. So we are going shopping tomorrow evening. I've already done a significant part of my shopping on e-bay, so I don't have a lot to do - except for the kids. Got some great deals, too! :-)

» PatM_6 - Two Min Pins

What fun I had today.

A very nice couple came today to buy Q-collars for their two dogs. On the phone, the little one sounded like a real challenge. The older one was just fine.

So here they came with the two Min Pins.

This was such fun. I started with the older dog. Ricki is about 2 yrs old and had never learned to walk properly.

I used a light long line attached to a 10# weight.

Within 5 minutes, little Ricki was walking just fine. I gave orders to get rid of the Flexi-lead and remind the dog that the line means there are limits.

I then took Lucy. Lucy is 11 weeks old and has not been out in the world much. Lucy is from a good breeder, but has not been off the property.

We did the old "tie the puppy to the older dog trick" and little Lucy caught on quickly.

Lucy was a bit over whelmed, but once mom had the line instead of me, Lucy did much better.

This was so much fun. The couple was certainly happy, they now have trained dogs in time for the Holidays.

» thurlow - Small testimonial

Our little Lakie girl took training from Pat last month and has been quite an angel until our daughter came home from college. Enter a soft-hearted coed and the trouble began.

Minimal crying suddenly resulted in escape from her crate. I have no idea how she figured it out, because she had not been crying at all previously.

The nights have been long. When the college kid comes in late, that upsets the little girl. I guess I made a mistake by letting her out after being awakened since she is in her crate all night now (at 18 week or so). A magic number??

Last night, she started crying two hours after being outside. I had left her Q-collar and line through the crate door in preparation.

It took about 10 minutes of "corrections" to get the point across that we were not going out in the middle of the night and she relaxed.

Thanks to the Q-collar, we may have a nice stay in a motel next week. I hope to reinforce this lesson as needed so that she is used to quiet nights.

Happy Holidays!

» PatM_6 - Good for you Sue

I remember when you came for the visit. I still smile thinking of just how hard you were trying to do things EXACTLY right.

I told you to relax, let your good common sense make your judgement calls.

.....and look at what we have- A VERY good decision on your part. I am very proud of you.

Don't you just love the look on the dog's face when they discover that you are able to correct them EVEN at a distance?

That is one of the best features when using the
Q-collar. If the owner is serious, the dog's behavior just continues to improve by leaps and bounds.

Even if the owner starts out with good intentions and then loses interest, the Q-collar still continues to do it's job, inspite of the owner.

The results may not be quite as good as it would have been with consistency, but nonetheless, will be better.

Your post did my heart a world of good.

Right now I am dealing with a person that has actually never tried using the Q-collar. She is telling anyone that listens, that it is a waste of money. This from a friend???????????

I loved hearing from you.

» LisaInCal - Q-collar NOT a waste of money!

I find it hard to believe that the anyone would consider the Q-collar a waste of money.

I am a skeptical individual. I don't change unless there is a darn good reason, unless there is something proven to be better. You could ask the various dog trainers whose classes I have attended over the years!

When Pat showed me the prototype of the Q-collar, I was all for it, immediately.

What a deal- a really good training booklet and the Q-collar!

As Pat knows from my frequent conversations with her, I have had to change my training methods, and I continue to do so. Each time I train a new dog and owner, I build upon what I learned from the previous dog.

The biggest change I am still trying to institute is how to use the Q-collar as a passive correction, where the collar and whatever the dog is tied to do the work of the correction.

I am finding all sorts of avenues in which to promote the use of this collar and the associated training methods.

While it is a simple tool with simple methods, the Q-collar can also be a real thinker's tool!

» thurlow - Another small testimonial

Hi Pat,

Glad to know we are doing ok with out little darling. Thanks for the encouragement.

Clearly this "friend" doesn't know diddly about dog training if she can't see the benefit of the Q-collar. I could not be more pleased. and I am a classic novice.

As you often say, the problem is more often the humans than the dogs.

We are now working again with the dragging line. As our little cherub passes from very sweet and mild to true Lakeland temperament, we find the "dragline" even more helpful.

Even the coed who wondered why we had that thing dragging behind her (and kept taking it off) now appreciates the ability to put on the brakes as needed.

We are working hard on wait right now hoping that this will be a great stop gap as we work toward getting the little monster to come when we call.

What did you say about a metamorphosis at a certain age? I think we are experiencing it. she has quite coming when called.

She is especially difficult for Tom. She ignores him just like our kids did!!

Quick question. Tom likes to rub her belly and get her revved up! Good or bad idea during the more serious training period.

ALSO, now that she is up to 8 pounds (+-) , how heavy to you recommend for the weight?

Happy Holidays. We are getting a big snow tomorrow. Should be fun!!!

» thurlow - CONTINUING SUCCESS

Hi All,

Our continuing success with the Q-collar is pretty amazing. I have enjoyed regaling colleagues with tales of the training and successes.

In the course of the discussions, people have indicated an interest in learning more. Our dog doctor and others have requested the web site.

As aforementioned we are interested in having a seminar up here during the summer.

I am wondering what is needed logistically... building, park, etc.

Sue

PS: Nice new look on the web page, Traci.
