» cjosie9 - Caution

Another problem one may encounter is the use of herbals to assist in aiding in the "correction" of infertility. Even as a by-product to help you relax, you may be inviting an even more involved problem if you use over-the-counter or herbal products.

Herbalist "claim" their products are safe and can be used by everyone. They also promote these products as a "cure" for just about any and every known condition.

These products are not recognized safe or productive in any form of medical justification by the FDA. Beware of the HYPE you hear about these products. When herbals are bottled, they are not screened for quanity or quality of preparation. In some instances the entire plant is used, or only the root, stem or leaves may be used to "create" a product. Each plant may have compounding negative results on the body, based on how they were manufactured.

Herbs cause toxins in the body, with adverse side effects. Several known reactions include: stress on the liver (different than real hormones}; thining of the blood, this is critical if you are already on a medication to thin the blood, and you take ginkgo biloba, the result is hemorhaging.

If you hear of any herb that is advertised to improve your hormones or other cure-alls, do not take the chance in harming yourself even more so.
And above all, do not mix prescribed medication with any over-the-counter or herbal product.

In response to message posted by cjosie9:
I must disagree with you on some points. Herbalists study the use of herbs, how they are identified, their usage, and they also study interactions with other medications and side effects. Qualified herbalists go to school to learn this. I have never seen a qualified herbalist 'claim' that herbs are 'cure-alls', far from it.

The FDA is not required to 'regulate' or to recognize any herbal preparations as 'safe' or as 'productive'. Pharmacutical companies will not market herbal remedies because they would have to chemically alter them to obtain a patent on the 'finished product'. However, many herbs are the 'starting points' of several medications all over the world. Pharmacutical companies chemically alter the properties and then, once they have a totally different end product, they go about 'testing' it and asking the FDA for approval.

Herbal research is extensive on several herbs, and nonexistant on others. There is a big difference between a 'cure-all' and a proven herbal remedy.

For example, I know of several women that did not ovulate on their own. Their doctor's prescribed Clomid. They had such severe side effects that they only used that drug for one month, and some did not get results from using it. They had two options, move on to more invasive drugs (injectables) that could cause other side effects just as severe, or try a 'natural' approach. Vitex, also known as Chaste Tree Berry or Monks Pepper was herbal alternative. This herb worked by allowing a hormonal balance to occur which resulted in regular ovulation. They also did not experience any side effects. Because vitex is a hormone regulator, it should never be taken at the same time hormonal birth control is used as it can make the birth control ineffective.

The thing about herbs is that you must do your research. If you are going to use any medication, of which herbs are a part, you must know what you are taking, how it works, how long it takes for it to work, under what conditions you should not take it or stop taking it, and what the possible side effects are.

And your statement that "Herbs cause toxins in the body, with adverse side effects." should be restated to 'Some herbs can cause toxins.'

» Mary Trotter Kion - Infertility

Hi Debbie,
I was just cruzing around and reading. This was very interesting. My daughter went through a lot of what you talk about. And then one day she presented me with a bib that said "Grandma's Baby." She did it in a restaurant but we both laughed and cried anyway.

Thanks,
Mary

Thank you Dan. I always try to be very careful when talking about "alternative" and "natural" remedies. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a "cure-all", and any kind of medication (of which herbs are) can have side effects.
