Welcome to Suite101. What a fun and unique topic! Although I'm technically a "second-generation" punkster who grew up with The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Ramones, Dead Kennedys, etc., I'm looking forward to future articles. I know how it feels to be an aging rocker. I'm a 31-year-old mom with a Crass tattoo on her arm from "the good ol' days." Can't wait to explain that one to my daughter one day!

Thanks Kari and Michele! No embarssing tattoos to explain here (body ink wasn't too big yet back in the late 70's), but I rue the day I have to start assuming some sort of responsibility for what my kids listen to. Any suggestions on how to explain The Stooges?

That shouldn't be too hard. Most rock bands today draw directly from the Stooges' influence. Although try explaining that to a teenager. For all they know, music didn't exist before 1990!

Yeah, even though many of today's new bands ("Garage rock" revival? Feh...) owe a huge debt to The Stooges, few of them know it. So many of the kids enrolled in Remedial Rawk 101 just don't seem to get it right. What's missing? A sense of desperation and/or purpose. Go figure...
