» seranade - comments after reading the Girl Group Sound

Hi Patricia, I've always liked 60's music. Your article on The Girl Group Sound was very informative and I didn't know that this type of group was interchangeable before reading your article.

Dear Seranade:

Thank you very much for your lovely compliment.
Unfortunately, it was a common practice "back in the day" to replace group member vocals with background or session singers, or at times, other groups! And a common reason was to make as much cash as possible. So a member's sick, touring, or unavailable? No problem. Just get someone else; the record company can make twice the money. What does it matter, right? But it DID matter to those singers.(You may recall a song called "I Sold My Heart To The Junkman" from 1962, by The Blue Belles or Bells-this was Patti LaBelle and The Blue Belles as they were known then. Well, it turns out that original recording was actually done by a group called The Starlets. I believe there were some legal problems going on, and somehow LaBelle's group ended up being credited with this song as their first top 40.
And the most notable example, is the use of The Andantes, Motown's excellent female backup group, on some of the Supremes' later hits. It wasn't always Mary and Cindy backing up Diana! And The Ikettes, Ike and Tina's backup group, weren't always the same women on their recordings!)
I believe this also cheated many singers, regular members and session personnel, out of royalty and residual payments.
And this is the end of my tangent!
You have a nice weekend and wonderful holiday, and again, THANK YOU.

Sincerely,
Pat J.
