» Lcullins - Ovarian Cysts and Birth Control Pills

I have had ovarian cysts to rupture several times over the past 10 years. My doctor says that they are caused by taking a low dose birth control pill. He has changed my bc pills several times, but I still have the same problems. I decided to quit taking the pill. I am confused because everything that I read on the internet says that birth control pills are taken to help reduce the problem of ovarian cysts. Is it possible that I could be ovulating when these cysts rupture? If so, can I therefore be fertile? Thanks for any information that you can supply.

I would first suggest that you get a second opinion. You and your doctor need to know what is causing the cysts (it is not the pill) so that a proper treatment can be started.

It is possible that you are still ovulating, especially if you are taking the progestin only pill, or mini-pill. If that is the case, a combination pill (that contains both progestin and estrogen) should help to correct the problem and keep you from ovulating.

This is only a guess on my part, as your doctor should be able to determine what is causing the cysts in the first place. If they are functional cysts (caused by ovulation) then the combined pill should stop ovulation and the cysts should also stop. If the cysts are caused by something else (polycystic ovarian syndrom for example) the pills should help, but additional medication may be needed.

I think the best thing to do is to see another doctor and get a second opinion. If you need assistance with how to choose a doctor, please let me know.

I have had many Ovarian Cysts rupture. Is this bad for you? All of my doctors just say to wait and see if it takes care of itself, but they keep rupturing. I just want to know if that fluid is harmful to your body, or could cause any damage.

In response to message posted by Itsybeth:

This is actually a very difficult question to answer without additional information as to the type of cysts that you have. If the doctor is taking a 'wait and see' approach, then you most likely have what are called 'functional' cysts or possibly Polycystic Ovaries or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

I would suggest that you go to eTenet and read the information they have about Ovarian Cysts. Once you have read this information you should be able to create a list of questions to ask your doctor. Take the list with you to your next appointment.

I hope that this information helps!

I was just wondering was it the low-dose bc pills that caused the cyst? I take low dose bc pills as well and developed a cyst. I am confused because as you stated, all I read seens to say that the pill helps prevent cysts. Thanks for your help.

» KayBee9 - I am on low dose birth control pills, Alesse, and I am convinced

I am on low dose birth control pills, Alesse, and I am convinced I am dealing with a functional ovarian cyst just based on past symptoms experienced the last times I had issues with this--one time landed me in the ER due to the severity of the pain but it's not as bad this time.

It's always on the same side-left-and always the same symptoms...

The thing is I have to wait another 10 days before I can get in to the women's health care clinic... I've had a few trans vaginal ultrasounds as well as abdominal ultrasounds and x-rays and the only thing found were functional cysts... My most recent ultrasound was in November.
