» Jeanhill - Website

I am new to this type of thing but here goes. I want to know the easiest way for me to create my own website. I want to start a writing business and need to create one. Any suggestions or helpful hints?

Jeanette

It depends on what you want to do and how much you want to learn. The best thing to do is to pick up basic HTML and write your own simple pages in a text editor. That will give you the most control and flexibility over time. Most ISPs include a small amount of web space with their accounts so you should already have some place to put the files. This method does require a bit of rampup time but it will yield the best results.

There are also a lot of free or cheap websites out there that have online WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editors that are simple to use. The problem with these is they give you very little control over what's on your page and how it looks. Most of them do not look very professional.

If you have some idea of precisely what you want on your page, that might help with further suggestions.

Good luck,

Janice

You can try www.geocities.com
You can build a site free and get a little experience too.

The definition of "easy" depends on your requirements and the type of service you will be offering to your visitors.

Here are some of my thoughts: -

Will you be having regular content updates from yourself or other people? If so, you might want to reduce your maintenance and administration by having a content management system (CMS). PHPNuke and PostNuke are free CMS and http://www.hostnuke.com offers hosting and CMS as part of their service.

Alternatively, you can just use the free web space available from your ISP and register a domain name and have the domain name cloak your address.

Do you intend to sell products online? You'll need a host that supports e-commerce and you'll have to do reasearch on payment methods. Check out http://www.paypal.com.

Regards
