My other shepherd had HD in both hips--really bad.
This was before Rimadyl. Her vet operated and took out both hip joints. She got back to the point of a slow run without any apparent pain. She was about 11 then. There was a lot of recupe time though. If a person can't stay home with their pet during this time, he shouldn't have it done.
