Regarding Psalm 82: why would an all supreme being, creator of all that is and ever will be,be defending himself to a pantheon of peers?

PSALM 58

1 For the Leader; Al-tashheth. A Psalm of David; Michtam.

2 Do ye indeed speak as a righteous company? Do ye judge with equity the sons of men?

3 Yea, in heart ye work wickedness; ye weigh out in the earth the violence of your hands.

4 The wicked are estranged from the womb; the speakers of lies go astray as soon as they are born.

5 Their venom is like the venom of a serpent; they are like the deaf asp that stoppeth her ear;

6 Which hearkeneth not to the voice of charmers, or of the most cunning binder of spells.

7 Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth; break out the cheek-teeth of the young lions, O the Lord.

8 Let them melt away as water that runneth apace; when he aimeth his arrows, let them be as though they were cut off.

9 Let them be as a snail which melteth and passeth away; like the untimely births of a woman, that have not seen the sun.

10 Before your pots can feel the thorns, He will sweep it away with a whirlwind, the raw and the burning alike.

11 The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance; he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.

12 And men shall say: 'Verily there is a reward for the righteous; verily there is a God that judgeth in the earth.'

Deuteronomy
chapter 32

7 Think back on the days of old, reflect on the years of age upon age. Ask your father and he will inform you, ask your elders and they will tell you:

8 When the Most High assigned the nations their heritage, when he parceled out the descendants of Adam, He set up the boundaries of the peoples after the number of the sons of God;

9 While the LORD'S own portion was Jacob, His hereditary share was Israel.

10 He found them in a wilderness, a wasteland of howling desert. He shielded them and cared for them, guarding them as the apple of his eye.

11 As an eagle incites its nestlings forth by hovering over its brood, So he spread his wings to receive them and bore them up on his pinions.

12 The LORD alone was their leader, no strange god was with him.

What need does the omniscient and omnipotent "creator of all that is and ever will be" have to partition the world and peoples among others? Has his sole tutelage of the earth removed injustice and evil ways? (rhetorical)

The Jews were not chosen because they were partcularly righteous nor deserving: they were chosen because they had "no othre god." In fact, this God's involvement with the Jews began when they were the eastern Akkadians and he was known to them as Adonai.

There are others and there have always been others. We are not alone and our knowing of the Truth is only dawning.
