If ever a man needed to be put out of office it is Geedubya. That psalm is a take off on one the Democrats used in 1932 against Herbert Hoover. You should have heard the one the Republicans used against Roosevelt. Went something like this, Rejected at the Gates of Hell A stranger stood at the Gates of hell, And the Devil himself answered the bell. He looked him over from head to toe, And said: My friend, I'd like to know What you have done in the line of sin, To entitle you to come within? Then Franklin D, with his usual guile, Stepped forth with his toothy smile and said: "When I took charge in '33, A nations faith was mine," said he "I promised them this and I promised them that, And I calmed them down with a fireside chat. I spent their money on fishing trips, And fished from the decks of their battleships. I gave them jobs in the WPA, Then raised their taxes and took it away. I raised their wages and closed their shops, I killed their pigs and buried their crops I double-crossed both old and young, And still the folks my praises sung. I brought back beer, and what do you think? I taxed it so high they couldn't drink. I furnished 'em money with Government loans, When they missed a payment I took their homes. When I wanted to punish the folks, you know, I'd put my wife on the radio. I paid them to let their farms lie still, And imported foodstuffs from Brazil. I curtailed crops when I felt real mean, And shipped in crops from the Argentine. When they started to worry, stew and fret, I got them to chant the alphabet With the AAA and the NLB, The WPA and the CCC. With these many units I got their goats, And still I crammed it down their throats. My workers worked with the speed of snails, While the taxpayers chewed their fingernails. When the organization needed dough, I closed their plants with the CIO. I ruined jobs, I ruined health, And I put the screws on the rich man's wealth. And some who couldn't stand the gaff, Would call on me and how I'd laugh. When they got too strong on certain things, I'd pack and head for "Ole Warm Springs." I ruined their country, their homes and then, I placed the blame on "Nine Old Men." Now Franklin talked both long and loud, And the devil stood and his head he bowed. At last he said: "Lets make it clear, You'll have to move, you can't stay here For once you mingle with this mob, I'll have to find myself a job." - anonymous -- posted by Phil_J » Jralm - Re: That Was Nothing, Dan. You know, the one where 600-800 citizens from all over Texas gathered to chant, "One, two three, four; kick the liar out the door." -- posted by dancooper » dancooper - Re: plox: To learn more In response to message posted by plox:Thanks for the contribution. But please know this: I am very fortunate that there is no connection, by ego or any other factor, with the likes of whats-his-name. It's okay, though. He probably can't even spell reactionary, neocon, radical right, or power trip. -- posted by dancooper » dancooper - Re: anniebee9940: To learn more In response to message posted by anniebee9940:You are probably right about his machine being quite powerful. Just looking at how he got in the first time illustrates that fact with sparkling clarity. And I wouldn't be at all surprised if his full-to-the-brimwarchestt, and his devilishneoconn power trippers result in a heck of a big hurdle to overcome. But his actions speak for themselves, and even some of the more level-headed Republicans have started to turn their backs on his administration. I personally count nine Republicans who I know and communicate with fairly regularly, who state emphatically (if begrudgingly) that they won't be voting for Sheriff Bunny Pants, the little shrub, this time. One even said quite unexpectedly that he would never vote Republican again! And please try to have more hope in this landslide I have predicted. (And don't forget to vote.) And there is just one more thing to remember, too: Peace. -- posted by dancooper » dancooper - Re: That Was Nothing, Dan. Read This One!! In response to message posted by Phil_J:Thanks for the update. Yes, that one is impressive. I tend to prefer shorter pieces so the likelihood is greater that more people will read them through to the end. FDR was before my time, but my grandfather spoke of him as though he was some sort of god. Gramps was one of the many who lost their family businesses to the depression. FDR saved Gramps' butt with all the social programs implemented at the time. Of course, those programs are what we had to pay for over the following two decades. And the debt they caused was the highest and most extravagant in U$ history. That is, the highest and most extravagant debt in U$ history until Sheriff Bunny Pants had himself not one but two wars, one of which was completely unnecessary, and the other completely unwinnable. -- posted by dancooper » Phil_J - FDR & The Thirties In response to message posted by dancooper:I was born in 1931 so I remember the thirties. Most everyone in our neighborhood thought Roosevelt was the savior of our country. My parents were Republicans and thought he was no good. That's why I remember that poem. In retrospect, it's hard to see why any one would not have supported the FDR. He stopped the capitalist drive to take America over for the wealthy. WWII was important in creating jobs for millions of Americans. Soldiers earned $18.00 per month and shop wages were $.75 per hour with no benefits. Bush would have identified with Herbert Hoover and opposed Roosevelt--no doubt on that. The Bush economic policies are very good for capitalist expansion and if you have millions to invest, you have to think of Bush as your key to an ever increasing estate. Otherwise, you are going to end up in the lower classes. But, you have to recognize that the more millionaires and billionaires there are, the more jobs there will be for the rest of us--cutting grass and going door to door in the winter shoveling snow. People will be getting jobs sweeping streets and picking papers up off the highways and byways. Think of all the jobs the Bush policies are creating. Why some people will even get jobs cleaning out toilets. Lucky us that Bush is helping capitalism work. -- posted by Phil_J » dancooper - FDR & The Thirties In response to FDR & The Thirties posted by Phil_J:“Lucky us,” that Bush’s version of capitalism is just about to work itself out of a job. We are lucky for several reasons, none of which can be credited in any positive sense to the Little Shrub. We are fortunate that whoever replaces him will be better than he is. How could we be unlucky enough to get someone worse? And even in the unlikely event that a Republican will win this time around, even some of the influential members of that party have undoubtedly learned a valuable lesson or two from the incompetence and insensitivity of the shrubbery. -- posted by dancooper « Previous 1 2 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
