» Infinity - To buy or not to buy

Was thinking of changing from wood backup heating to pellet stove. Hubby has has 2 heart attacks and I have fibromyalgia so wood is now very laborious for us. Would like to get feedback from someone that actually owns this type of stove with positive and negative results so we can weigh the pros and cons.

We had a pellet stove for about seven years and loved it.It was much cleaner than our previous wood fire place had been, there was no chimney to worry about and it really put out the heat. And the heat was easier to control.

Some downsides might be - the bags are quite heavy, I too used to suffer quite badly with FM. However, depending on your husband's condition he should be able to handle them fine. You will have to order in a good supply of bags so get a healthy friend to help you at that time.

The ash box also needs to be vacuumed out on a fairly regular basis if you use it a lot. Shop vac is best.

And lastly pellets are not always readily available in all areas. We lived in a smaller size city in Alberta and found that we always had to place a special order in summer through a fireplace store so that we had a stock in winter.

Good luck on your decision.

Thanks for the info Red. I think it outweighs the advantages of making wood or having it delivered and having to pile it all and pick up the mess afterwards. Did it give good heat? Thanks a bunch.

Hi again,

Just asked hubby and he informed me that if you have to buy wood (rather than having a source where you can cut cheaply, et al) pellets are the best deal.

Excellent heat.

Hugs on the FM - I am living proof that there is relief - I have lived the last 8 or so years in relative good health after 20 or more years of being subject (along with my dear husband) to the whims of FM. (I am in my 60's and enjoying a life of full time RVing with my hubby who has Asthma and diabetes. We spend the summer in Canada and the winter in the southern US. My relief was Usana vitamins - it may be yours or not. Never give up hope. An answer will come - if not today, then tomorrow. )
