Meet the Audience: Doing Local History (I of II)

For me, what bridged the space between mid-August and mid-September was about 200 years of the history of North Minneapolis. I was invited to collaborate on a storytelling event that encouraged the local community to envision conditions experienced by those who had set foot on the banks of the Mississippi at various periods in U.S. history. My role was initially defined as doing some basic research and writing up a few scripts for the storytellers (actors) to work from. As I became more invested in the project, however, I found myself doing exploratory field trips, interviews, and even playing a role myself in the production.

Earling Iowa Exorcism – Part II

This is the continuation of the documented case of demonic possession and exorcism. The possessed: Anna Eckland. The Exorcist: Father Theophius Riesigner, a Capuchin monk and experienced exorcist. The place: the convent of the Franciscan Sisters in Earling, Iowa, in Shelby County, north of Harlan in western Iowa. The dates: June 18, 1912, August 18, 1928, September 13 to 20 and December 15 to 23, 1928. This is a detailed account of some of the events that took place during the exorcisms.

Investigation: A “Haunting” in Historic Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

The year was 1980. The house is in historic Bethlehem. My grandfather bought the house in the 1920s. It is a beautiful home that was built around the turn of the century. There is a stained glass window in the foyer and carved wood paneling. There used to be a wraparound porch in the front of the house that was removed. The first floor had a music room, library, parlor, kitchen, dining room and a pantry with a dumb waiter. The second floor contained a small sewing room, bath and three bedrooms. In the attic were the servants’ quarters for the cook and chauffer. The unattached garage had its own gas tank. In the basement, there was a wine cellar and other rooms. The house was converted into two apartments shortly before World War II. In 1950, an addition was built to the first floor. It was a large bedroom with full bath. My parents moved into the first floor apartment in 1972. My mother had the bedroom that was the addition for her bedroom. This was the scene of most of the phenomena.

Murder of the “Devil’s Bride:” Exorcism Gone Awry

The movie, Exorcism of Emily Rose, is, allegedly, based on the true story of a young girl in Germany who died during an exorcism. Her name was Annelise, also spelled as Anneliese, Michel. I have tried to find out about the real case, and found some conflicting information, albeit it some minor, such as her age. There is the documented case of Bernadette Hasler that happened in Zurich, Switzerland in 1966. The ringleaders and primary exorcists and murderers were John Stocker and Magdalena Kohler, both Germans, who were brought to trial three years later. Dr. Hans Bender, (I have also seen his name spelled Binder), psychiatrist and highly esteemed parapsychologist director of the Institute for the Studies of Border Areas of Psychology and Psychohygiene, Frieburg University, testified at the trial. Dr. Bender is also an expert on the poltergeist. Two of the stages of demonic possession consist of poltergeist activity. There no evidence of these stages in the case of Bernadette Hasler. This case brings new insight into the power of suggestion and brainwashing in cases of alleged possession and exorcism.
