Learned helplessness, an increasingly significant barrier to a healthy quality of life, can result in deep depression or even suicide, and therefore is a crucial mental health issue. The condition is usually the result of how parents, teachers and caregivers communicate with a child. Untreated, the person suffering from learned helplessness (often termed pessimism) remains unempowered, inadequately esteemed, and the pervasive belief that he cannot take care of himself or take responsibility for his life.
