Cross-Country Skiing

Cross country skiing: It's the quiet cousin to the flash and speed of downhill skiing. It's also a lot more exercise, as you trudge uphill as much as you glide down. As with downhill skiing, cross country comes in several flavors: backcountry, ski-mountaineering, cross country on groomed trails, ski-skating, racing.... All have a place. One of the advantages: If you live in a cold weather climate, you can find trails close to home. Look on golf courses, on park walking paths, and especially on rail-trails. Check out our articles to learn cross-country techniques like stopping and turning, intermediate skills like handing hills, and, of course, what gear and clothes to buy.
