Landscaping 101
Introduction
Welcome to my course, “Introduction to Landscaping”. A properly landscaped yard is much more than just an occasional shrub or tree dropped into the yard. By taking some time and properly planning your landscape you will reap many benefits as well as increasing the value of your property. A Money Magazine survey found that landscaping as a home improvement project has a recovery value of 100-200% if the landscaping is well done. Compare that to a kitchen overhaul which has a recovery value of 75-125%, and a bathroom remodel with a recovery of 80-120%, and you can see for yourself that landscaping is an economical way to add value to your home.
In addition, a properly landscaped yard can help to overcome potential site problems – such as drainage, erosion, and wind or dust problems. By taking time to evaluate your site and do appropriate planning, you can create outdoor rooms that can be an extension of your home as well as places for privacy or entertaining.
By learning the basics of landscaping you can determine what your needs are and then evaluate if you can accomplish the actual landscaping yourself or if you need to hire a professional. If you decide to “hire out” all or part of the work, by going through our classes you will learn how to work with landscape contractors.
People approach landscaping with different viewpoints and backgrounds. Your needs might dictate an easy maintenance approach while your neighbor might want extensive flower and vegetable gardens. In either case taking the time to properly plan the landscape can save time, headaches and money while giving you a yard you can enjoy.
