African Grey Parrots

Introduction

Someone once said that owning a parrot was like having a two year old child share the rest of your life. I don’t think that statement is too far off track. Parrots are noisy, messy, stubborn, inquisitive, intelligent, surprising and totally delightful. So why should you buy a parrot? Well, they are one of the most responsive pets you will ever own, even mimicking your own voice and occasionally your mannerisms. They live a long time, some 50 years or more, so you get a lot out of your investment. And since there are over 300 different species, personal preference is an enticing factor.

It should be noted that parrots, whether wild caught or domestic bred, have retained their ‘wild’ status and should not be considered on the same level as domestic dogs and cats. They will not respond to the same disciplinary stimuli as other household animals and they do require a deeper personal commitment. They consider their owners mates, or at least part of the flock. It is important to research the wild characteristics of your parrot choice so you are aware of ‘why’ they act a certain way. For instance, most parrots will be very vocal in the mornings and evenings. It’s their way of ‘calling’ in the flock to assure that everyone is safe and well.

Parrots, even though they are characterized by identifiable traits, should not be lumped together under one heading. Many of the species require very different environmental attributes such as the size of cages, feed, health issues and even toys. Parrot personalities widely differ so before you even consider purchasing a parrot you should do your homework by reading and/or talking to someone who owns the parrot you wish to acquire.

In this course we will discuss owning an African Grey parrot. I chose that species because they are my personal favorite. My own Grey, now ten years old, is as much a family member as any human relative. Grey’s are noted to be the best talkers; they are smaller in size than the macaws and some cockatoos, therefore easier, in my opinion to handle. They bond completely with their owners and though they do have their faults, they are generally considered to be one of the most intelligent of the parrot species. Alex, a very famous African Grey, is reputed to have the intellect of a kindergarten age child.
