IntroductionThe course will introduce you to the full person and Monarch of Charles I. You will be guided through his childhood and early years, through adulthood and Kingship, right to his death on the scaffold after a show-trial in 1649 following a bloody civil war. The above will be achieved not by overloading information, but allowing you to learn in a story-like way, with facts and accurate information. The story will be lightened at points by humorous anecdotes and also by little known, interesting information. At the end, you should feel like you are closer to a full understanding of how King Charles I developed his character and personality. We will get past the current norm of democratic political climates, which are a world away from 350 years ago. Richer than this, you can experience the human side of the man behind the crown and find out what attracted so many men to him but alienated others, and what still - to this day - makes him one of Britain’s most controversial Monarchs. The biggest event in his life was the English Civil War and the course will also shed light on the way Charles felt about this momentous event and how he coped with it all. There will be plenty of resources available and contemporary quotes will be used where possible to give you both an insight into modern thoughts and those from the 17th century.
