Buying Insurance

Introduction

Savvy Insurance Buyer:Personal Insurance is a new course designed to help anyone who is confused or unsure about buying personal insurance. It is intended only for residents of the United States. Laws and practices in other countries will vary.It is astonishing how little the general publc knows about the details of insurance and how to secure the right insurance. Typically, the buying public learns "through experience" and that can be a costly education. By default many of the decisions about what kind and how much insurance to buy are left to the insurance agent. While the overwhelming majority of these men and women are knowledgeable and hard working professionals, they simply can't be you.Despite their best efforts, special circumstances can be overlooked, personal details can remain undisclosed, and they may assume that because they are familiar with the product so are you. When you lack that basic product knowledge, you don't know what questions to ask and what issues to raise so confusion and sometimes costly omissions can result.

Taking this course will give you a basic understanding of the most common types of personal insurance. You will learn how insurance companies are rated and what the ratings mean. We will review auto insurance, homeowners and renters insurance, life, health, and disability insurance and annuities. You will learn which "optional" coverages you may need, and what the principle of "coinsurance" is and how it affects your insurance. By the end of this course you will have acquired the basic knowledge to determine what kind of insurance(s) you may need, what dollar limits are likely to be appropriate for your circumstances, and some strategies for fitting your insurance needs into your budget.

You may view insurance as a "necessary evil", but keep in mind that it is necessary, is frequently mandated by law or contract, and can protect you and your family from financial ruin. Most importantly, bear this old adage in mind: he who acts as his own insurance agent has a fool for a client. You can't be the insurance agent, but you can be knowledgeable, and Savvy Insurance Buyer can help you get it right.
