Houseplants Under Lights

Introduction

Special note: This course assumes you have completed the Houseplants for Beginners class offered at Suite University or a similar course offered by a garden center, florist shop, garden club, 4-H, etc.

“Houseplant” defines any plant grown inside. It is important to realize NO plants grow indoors naturally. It is our responsibility to meet the plant's total needs when we remove it from its natural environment and bring it inside our homes. Growing Houseplants Under Lights teaches you the basics of plant lighting, selecting containers, choosing appropriate potting media for different plants, methods of watering and providing humidity, the importance of pH for both media and water, fertilizing, common plant diseases and pests, and selecting plants to grow in your conditions (or in artificial conditions you provide).

This course will help you determine if you want to invest in expensive lighting systems suitable for use in your living room or if you prefer a simple system that could be set up in your basement (away from the critical eyes of guests and other family members).

If you have been growing plants on windowsills for some time and are eager to grow more difficult plants, this is the course for you. Many begin with simple houseplants such as Sansevierias, and then discover a passion for flowering plants, or perhaps for special succulents, or even plants from a specific country. Once growing houseplants has become a passion (some would call it an addiction), you will want to create additional areas for growing your favorite plants. Light gardening provides this option.
