Herb Gardening

Introduction

Whether you are wanting to grow a pot of thyme in the kitchen window or start a large scale commercial herb marketing venture the first place to begin is with the basics. We'll dish the dirt here and get you off to a rousing start on your venture be it Grand--or Small.

There are few among us who have not heard of the astonishing healing power of herbs; whether taken internally in teas, capsules, and tinctures, or used externally in aromatherapy or hands-on massage. There is probably none that has not tasted the wonder of culinary herbs in cooking recipes both old and new. And, that is what drew you to this course. A need to know how, whether on a grand scale or a small one, to grow your own green magic.

WE WILL BEGIN - with making choices. Which herbs are best for your purpose? If you are gardening in traditional gardening soil, the number and kind are nearly limitless. If your choice is container gardening, or small scale raised beds, we will discover which herbs will do better in those conditions. This course will help you decide where your interest lies. Is it healing herbs, fragrant herbs, or the culinary varieties? Perhaps a combination of all.

BETWEEN SPRING AND FALL - we will guide you in preparing your soil for herb gardening. We will decide which herbs to place where. Give you tips and guidelines for keeping the invasive varieties in their own corner. We will talk about weeds (you may be surprised to learn how many of those complement your herb garden).

BY THE MOON – If you have been gardening for a while you will have heard about moon signs and their importance to the growing effort. In this class we will discuss those moon signs and why we should be particularly attentive to the changes they present both in planting and harvesting.

WHAT NOW? – Your crop is growing, you are ready to harvest, what do you do now? Drying is the most common form of preserving your herbal garden, but, there are other methods which we will want to discuss using both the newly dried and the fresh herbs.
