Canadian Confederation
The era of Confederation was exhilarating, the air sparkling with political promise of a new country.
The Founding Fathers met, argued and, over time, settled on the many terms. On July 1, 1867, the Dominion of Canada was born, with John Alexander Macdonald selected as the first Prime Minister of the new country. Canada was still small, with only a few provinces. It would take more negotiations, political wrangling, and the pledge of a trans-Canada railway before the country we recognize today was formed.
