New Year's Tech Resolutions

Posted by Jennifer Mattern

Do you have technology-related resolutions for 2007? Can you think of resolutions popular tech companies should be making?

Now is the time of year where we make our New Year's Resolutions, to improve things, fix past mistakes, etc. Do you have any tech-related resolutions this year? Here are a few of my own tech-related new year's resolutions:

  • Create a better digital file organization system on my computer
  • Improve my HTML and CSS skills
  • Start to learn PHP programming
  • Overhaul two of my larger websites (my indie music webzine at AudioXposure.com - which is moving to a Wordpress backend, and my small business network at BizAmmo.com - which will be expanding from 4 to 20 sites hopefully by the end of February.
  • Launch a few new websites, including a blog on creative self-promotion (tied to a book proposal I'm currently finishing up), a niche press release distribution sites for musicians and a more general one for webmasters, an online press kit hosting site for businesses, and separate epk hosting site for musicians, and a few others.
  • Alter and expand a directory I run (FreeDeepLinks.com) - it will be on an upgraded script, new design, and new domain more targeted to end users than webmasters.
What about you? Do you want to upgrade your sound system or computer? Do you want to make modifications to your car, or buy a new one? Do you want to launch a web site or learn how to program in a new language? Do you want to dive more into Internet marketing efforts for your business or website?

Have you worked with some particularly difficult tech companies in 2006? Have any faulty product issues? Then come up with resolutions for those tech companies, and tell us how you think they could improve in the new year.

Start a new discussion, and tell us about your new year's tech resolutions for 2007!

Domain Name Addiction

Posted by Jennifer Mattern

For some people, myself included, registering domain names can become an almost addictive habit. Why do we keep buying domain names?

Registering domain names has become a sort of substitute for "retail therapy" for me. I'm an idea-junkie by nature, always coming up with new ideas for sites, ways to improve or rename current ones, and new projects I want to get started on. When the ideas come, I brainstorm names, and if a domain name is available (even if I'm not positive that I'll use it), I register it.

I have a habit of doing that mostly if I'm upset about something, because that's when I throw myself even more into work and planning than usual. I currently have between 8 and 10 sites that are fully developed and active, or close to it. I also have about 20 in various planning and development phases. On top of it, I come up with ideas for another 1-5 per month at the very least. I'd say I register 3-9 domain names most months.

Other webmasters have me beat. They can register hundreds at a time. But aside from the therapeutic aspect of conceptualizing and finding a good catch, why do we do it? There are a couple of common reasons:

1. Having an idea for a site, whether you plan to develop it now or in the future, and wanting to snag the domain before it's gone.

2. Wanting to register domains in order to flip them for a profit. This can be done by mass-purchasing domains at a discounted price, and simply reselling them at a low rate, or by hand-picking higher quality domains to resell individually, often in domain aftermarket auctions.

3. Wanting to set up a large collection of sites at once, on different domains (such as MFA - made-for-adsense - sites), where domains simply need to be keyword rich, even if not particularly marketable.

Domain name addiction is something I'll readily admit to, but not something I'm looking to change. I don't register domain names to sit on them or flip them. I hold onto them for planned projects, and if they're not going to work out, I simply let them go later on. It was just something that occurred to me while I was deciding on a few new domains to register later today.

What's your tech addiction?

Tech Rants and Raves

Posted by Jennifer Mattern

You've heard the tech support nightmares, and perhaps had a few of your own. You've also heard the hype around new technology launches. Now share you own stories!

Have you ever felt taken advantage of by a telecommunications company? Have you ever forked over the big bucks for the latest tech gadget, only to find it severely lacking? Have you had an unusually pleasant experience with a tech-related product or company, even despite hearing complaints elsewhere? Well Share your own tech-related stories, and give other consumers some insight before making buying decisions.

After a particularly unpleasant situation recently with a tech company, I decided I'd like to know what you think... and about anything technology-related! Your stories can be about your cell phone provider, your auto mechanic, the latest video game system or camera you purchased, and more.

Email your stories to me, whether positive or negative, to technology@suite101.com, and I'll post the most interesting stories here in the Suite101: Technology blog! (Just be sure to state whether you prefer to be mentioned or have the story poste anonymously.)

Please note: Opinions and facts will be posted, but libelous remarks without any facts backing up the claim will not. Please keep the language reasonably tasteful. By submitting a story, you agree to give me the right to publish it on the Suite101: Technology blog. I reserve the right to edit anything submitted prior to posting (predominantly for spelling, grammatical errors, language, and length).
