Thanksgiving is a time for family, food and fun. With so much going on, its no wonder that small children often become overwhelmed and a little fussy. Here are a few tips to keep tykes calm and turkey day great.
- Make sure children are rested (a tired child is almost certainly a cranky child). Sure, traveling to family or receiving relatives is very exciting, but try to keep the bedtimes consistent.
- If traveling, be sure to travel with familiar items that your child finds comforting.
- If the big meal will be served later than your child's usual mealtime, give him a little something to hold him until dinner.
- Don't worry too much about fancy clothes that may be uncomfortable for them and worrisome for you as you try to keep them clean.
- Remove your child to a quiet space for a little time away from the activity. You may want to share a story, song or special game during this time.
- Ask for and receive help from others. Release the need to be "supermom" or "superdad." No one can do it all and even the most capable parents need help.
- Diffuse tantrums and power struggles before they gather steam. Remember to offer choices where appropriate and offer your child (without forcing to her finish) a variety of dishes.
- Hold onto your sense of humor and have a great time.
