The General Assembly of the United Nations decided in 1994 that 9 August would be designated as the International Day for the World's Indigenous Peoples.
This date marks the day of the first meeting, in 1992, of the Working Group on Indigenous populations of the sub-commission on the promotion and protection of human rights. Phew. What a mouthful.
This day serves to draw attention to the poverty suffered by many of the world's 350 million indigenous peoples.
