Only half of Australia's Indigenous people of working age are part of the labour force (this figure includes those classified as unemployed).
The Aboriginal unemployment rate is around 20%, which is three times higher than that of the non-Indigenous population.
Nearly 20 percent of those Aborigines who are employed are working for CDEP, which is a kind of work for welfare scheme that mostly allows only two days of work per week at minimal pay.
Around 20 percent of those employed work in Government, and around 50 percent in the private sector. Only 15 percent of these are high skilled occupations, with 60 percent being low-skilled and 20 percent medium skilled. Only 4 percent are self-employed, and just 2 percent are employers.
