Recently a number of people I know have returned from Oshkosh 2008, the world's largest aviation gathering, which takes place every year in Wisconsin, USA. They all seem to have had a wonderful time, and seen some amazing new aircraft. I'm envious! I couldn't manage it this year, but one of these days I'll get there myself.
Thinking of Oshkosh reminded me of just what great fun it can be to visit an aviation gathering. This year I went to AeroExpo in the South of England, and while it's nothing like the size of Oshkosh, it was a great opportunity to see some new planes and helicopters, meet up with old friends, and just join together with other aviators.
Smaller events can be great fun too. Almost every weekend of the summer there are fly-ins - small gatherings at an airfield. Flying in gives you an opportunity to go somewhere new, that maybe you wouldn't normally have visited. Or if the weather isn't good enough for flying - as it often hasn't been this summer in the UK - why not drive there. You still have the chance to meet other flyers, discuss all things aviation, and generally share your passion with like-minded people.
Come to think of it, I must drag myself away from the computer and my job as a helicopter instructor, and get to an event myself. So...see you at a fly-in....
