Flying in Victoria Falls

My next flying lesson was somewhat unusual for someone who lives in ther UK - it was a microlight flight from Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe! Don't forget, this was some years ago, when Zimbabwe was still a safe place for a holiday.

What had happened was that almost as soon as I'd done my First Solo, I went on a camping safari to Zimbabwe and Botswana. It had been planned and booked for several months; the timing was coincidental. Anyway, we finished up in Victoria Falls, and I booked a microlight pleasure flight over the Falls. This was in a three-axis microlight, ie like a small fixed-wing plane, not the other sport, which look like motorbikes with sails! However, when the pilot discovered that I was learning to fly and had just flown solo, he turned it into a lesson - he handed over control to me and I got to fly most of the way to the Falls.

So that's how, after "First Solo" in my log book, I have a flight to and from Vic Falls. Not too many people can say that. It was a wonderful flight, and I got some fantastic photos of the falls too.

That's what happens when you start flying - amazing things occur. It really does change your life.
