After a few solo flights I was beginning to feel as though I knew what I was doing. I could fly! It didn't seem so difficult any more.
That all changed the first time we went out on a 'nav' or navigation training flight. Now I had to look at the map and work out where we wre, and talk on the radio, as well as flying the aircraft. And my flying went completely to pieces! This is quite normal...but I didn't realise it then. My instructor kept telling me to keep my altitude and heading, but how was I supposed to do that when I had to look at the ground and the map as well? And then there were those long radio calls, explaining what aircraft I was in and where I was going. Well, as soon as I pressed the transmit button I forgot everything I was going to say, so there were a lot of 'erms' and 'ahs' on that first flight.
I finished the sortie in something approaching despair. How on earth was I ever going to learn to do this? But did, as you'll see later...
