Tweens at the Movies

I checked some film reviews at The Family Style Film Guide. This site gives parents a nifty graph and specific details about profanity, nudity, sex, violence, drugs and alcohol in movies. Instead of one quote or rating, they list a number of ratings so you can get a bigger view of how many critics rate movies. Also important to families, the site gives a summary of movies.

A family trip to the movies is expensive. I hate it when I spend money on a movie none of us likes much, so I listen to what friends are saying and read online reviews.

This year, I am looking for a movie my tweens will enjoy along with their younger siblings. A quick check of the review sites gives me an overview of the basic content. From there I’ll read the movie synopsis and decide which movie sounds most interesting for a family of six. Here’s what I found :

  • Flicka, rated PG: This movie was reviewed for having mild profanity, very little nudity and violence, brief sex play, and no drugs or violence.
  • Flushed Away, rated PG: This movie was reviewed for having no profanity, very little cleavage, no sex, some violence, and very little drug and alcohol use.
  • Open Season, rated PG : This movie was reviewed for having mild profanity, no nudity, drugs or alcohol, brief conversation about sex, and some violence.
  • Deck the Halls, rated PG: This movie wasn’t reviewed yet on the two family ratings sites I checked. It opens Nov 22nd . The movie review site Rotten Tomatoes hasn’t rated it yet, but does give a good synopsis of the film.
  • Happy Feet, rated PG. This film wasn’t listed at the Family Film Style Guide, so I checked Kids in Mind. They gave it 3 out of 10 for discussions of sex/nudity, 4 out of 10 for violence and gore, and 1 out of 10 for profanity. You can read details about the movie on their website.
  • The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, rated G: This movie was reviewed for having mild profanity, no nudity, sex or drugs and alcohol, and some violence.
