Halloween Safety Tips

Keeping tweens safe during trick-or-treating is as simple as T.W.E.E.N.S.:

  • Trick-or-treat in a group or with a trusted adult – never alone
  • Wear flame-resistant costumes and masks and stay away from lit candles
  • Examine all candy with an adult before eating it
  • Everyone in your group should carry a flashlight and stick reflective tape to your costume and trick-or-treat bag
  • Never enter the home of someone you don’t know well
  • Stay safe on the streets by following normal traffic safety rules

My boys, like many tweens, will trick-or-treat in a group without us. Before they head out we will:

  1. plan their route together
  2. agree on a timetable
  3. give them one of our cell phones to use in case of emergency
  4. review trick-or-treating safety rules
  5. remind them not to enter homes or approach dark houses

We live on a long, straight street that is well-lit. Traffic is light. We know most of our neighbors. The families on my street still trick-or-treat, so the sidewalks are crowded between 6-8 PM. I won't be sending my boys and their friends out to roam dark, empty streets.

In many communities, parents are choosing to quit trick-or-treating altogether. I am seeing more alternatives in my greater community like trick-or-treating at the mall or at local churches.

Why don’t you start a discussion and tell us what is happening in your community? Will your tweens be trick-or-treating? Where do your kids trick-or-treat? Are your tweens allowed to trick-or-treat without an adult?

Whatever your family decides to do, stay safe and have fun trick-or-treating this year!
