Is corporate social responsibility solely for big business or can all businesses benefit from adopting a people, profits, planet approach?
CSR principles provide an opportunity for businesses to adopt practices that have significant positive impacts on environmental and social issues within the community they operate in. Businesses regardless of their size are members of the community and as such need to be responsible members of the community.
Adopting business practices with corporate social responsibility at the heart of the practice and the business operations provides a situation where the business can become a change leader in society. For smaller business, being a change leader may lead to a unique selling point and differentiate the business from its competitors.
Undertaking environmental audits and engaging the community through open days are 2 simple ways in which smaller businesses can improve their corporate social responsibility credentials and potentially gain access to increases in market share, productivity gains and decreased costs.
In manufacturing and other production business, there are many environmentally friendly production methods than can be used including lean production systems. Reducing the carbon footprint of business is another easy to implement method of increasing social corporate responsibility initiatives.
The options are endless for businesses who wish to improve their corporate citizenship and many can be implemented easily.
