All of my Flickr friends have been laughing at me because of my lack of sleep due to my darling girl kitties going into heat almost constantly. I’m a breeder, so that’s just part of it, though you never do reach the point where you can just sleep through it! They say that a female cat is either in heat, pregnant, or fixed. In this instance, “They” are right!
One thing that I did not expect, however, was for my 4-month old kitten to go into heat! Yes, I did say 4-month old. I panicked and started searching Google like crazy, and was quite relieved to hear that other cats, kittens rather, have gone into heat at four months old.
Contributing factors around my house, of course, are that I have an unaltered male, and I have other girls that go in and out of heat. I believe that my girls are working off each other’s hormones, too, like women who work in offices together for so long that their cycles begin to coincide.
Though this is a pretty uncommon occurrence in kitties, it’s just another reason to go ahead and have your kitty spayed or neutered at a young age. I normally suggest between 5 and 7 months old but am beginning to think maybe a bit younger. Can you imagine your four month old baby becoming pregnant?
Maybe if I became nocturnal, I’d get more sleep. I wonder if my hubby would mind me napping all day with the girls?
