As a cat breeder, I try to be as responsible as I can possibly be and help out with rescue situations whenever I can. When people get a kitten from me, I make them sign a spay and neuter contract, as well as a statement that their cat will never be allowed to roam free outdoors. Unfortunately, feral cats are a major problem in many areas due to unaltered cats living outdoors and breeding freely.
In an article by Sarah Wyatt, "Women are Angels to Feral Cats," Sarah says that DVM magazine states, "one female cat and her offspring can exponentially produce more than 400,000 kittens during a seven-year period." The numbers are horrifying! Fortunately, there are many programs working hard to trap feral cats, have them altered, and then release them back into their colony. You have to wonder if it will ever be enough as long as people neglect their cat's care or simply refuse to have them spayed or neutered.
In another article, "Shelter Cares for Rescues," Sarah shares a story of more felines in need of help, this time at the expense of an irresponsible breeder who kept cages and cages of cats in poor and unsanitary living conditions. As with many shelters, they are in desperate need of help from anyone who can offer foster homes or give a donation of any kind, as they care for cats and kittens of all ages, including pregnant cats with upcoming litters.
Stories like these can break your heart just knowing that cats are suffering, but at least we know that we can all help in some way. Perhaps you can't foster a cat, but even a small donation to your local shelter can help. And if you happen to be looking for a new feline family member, please think of adopting a shelter kitty!
