Alternative to the Cat Food Recall

Many of you feed your cats wet foods in order to keep them from possibly getting dehydrated. If you do, or if your sweet kitty just likes wet food, here are some alternatives.

  • Canned Tuna or Chicken – This is always a good choice. Only put out the amount of tuna or chicken that your cat can eat at one time, as it will spoil quickly at room temperature. Store the remaining amount in the refrigerator in a ziploc bag and use within a day or two.
  • Ground Beef & Rice – This is a great treat and a healthy alternative to wet food. I feed this to cats that are recovering from illness or who have just had a litter of kittens. Simply mix cooked beef and rice half and half, making sure to get as much grease off the beef as possible. I do this by pressing it between paper towels.
  • Ground Dry Cat Food – Take whatever brand of dry cat food your normally feed and put it in the blender, pulsing until ground fine. To one cup of dry mix, add 1/3 cup of water or mixed Kitten Milk Replacer, and 1 tsp of plain yogurt. This is my cat’s favorite!

To be safe right now, it is best to avoid all canned wet food until the producers can figure out what went wrong and rectify it. This includes cans and pouches of wet pet foods.
