John Tyler (1790-1862), tenth president of the US was born on March 29, 1790, the son of John Tyler, Sr and Mary Armistead, in Charles City county, Virginia. He graduated from William and Mary College.
He married Letitia Christian in 1813 and re-married Julia Gardiner after Letitia's death 31 years later. He had 14 children.
In 1809, he was admitted to the bar, the same year his father became governor of Virginia.
A longtime Democrat-Republican, Tyler was elected Vice-President (March 4, 1841) on the Whig ticket. He became president one month later, on April 4, 1841, when the incumbent president, William Henry Harrison, died of viral pneumonia. His term of office was from 1841 - 1845.
