Edward Steichen (1897-1973), American photographer born in Luxembourg, pioneered the American photography. He is considered one of the greatest masters of photography, and outstanding photographers of the 20th century.

He supported Alfred Stieglitz open two photographic galleries in New York. He was first a portraitist and fashion photographer, then pioneered aerial photography during World War I; also commanded naval combat photography during World War II.

Steichen organized the famous "Family of Man" exhibition in 1955, while director of the photography department of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He held the position for 15 years, from 1947.
