Chess Master Bobby Fischer Dies

Robert James "Bobby" Fischer (1943-2008), controversial American chess player has died. A spokesman for Fischer said that he died in a Reykjavik hospital. Iceland was his adopted country.

Bobby Fischer was born in Chicago, Illinois. He was the US (1958-60; 1962-63) and world champion (1972-75). He was named an international grand master in 1958. He gained fame in his teens, aged 14, when he became the youngest ever to win the US chess championship, and at 15, the youngest international grandmaster in history.

In 1975, Fischer refused to defend his world title.
