Agritourism

I recently returned from a trip to organic coffee farms throughout Nicaragua (where I picked up this gallo pinto recipe along with others). The entire experience was terribly fascinating and quite affordable as far as vacations go.

Aside from opening my eyes to the various models of farming and wide array of organic practices, the trip introduced me to a movement within the farming community to attract consumers to their farms in the form of tourism.

Back in Connecticut, I did a little research and came across a "Connecticut Farm Map" that has information on 204 farms, farmers' markets, and other agritourism attractions (such as corn mazes and hay rides). Map in hand, I have been heading out to discover some of the hidden agricultural gems within my home state.

With Fall coming up, it is the perfect time to visit some of the local agricultural sites near your home. This is a great way for the whole family to learn about how local farmers are producing the food you eat, engage with the process of food production, and enjoy spending an afternoon outside.

Agritourism World is a great website to get you started on your journey regardless of where you are in the world. Also you can contact your local Department of Agriculture to see if they have agritourism maps. Missouri, California, Connecticut, and Oklahoma all have easy to find agritourism maps, but it's possible your state has them as well.

So get out there and have fun! Please leave a comment on what you find and what your favorite spots are that you find.
