Sony Ericsson Men's Tennis Draw

Day-3 Shockers

Ok, the biggest news on Day 3 is three-seed Novak Djokovic’s exit in the 2nd round to qualifier Kevin Anderson in three (7-6 (1), 3-6, 6-4). If you tell me you picked that, I’ll call you a name. Djokovic is still my pick to become the next No.1 once Roger steps down, regardless of what Borg says about Nadal being next to earn that honor.

But Djokovic wasn’t the only shocker. David Nalbandian the No.7 seed and conqueror of the top-three players in the world a few short months ago, fell to Xavier Malisse who is currently ranked 311! Yes, 311! Ok, Malisse has been a perennial top-50 player, but Nalbandian in the second round?

Key Day-4 Match-ups

Key Match-ups for Saturday include Roger Federer and unseeded Gael Monfils. Ordinarily, I would not hesitate to say Federer in straights, but given Federer’s struggles thus far this year, I guess another upset is possible. I wouldn’t bet on it though. Federer in two despite his widely-rumored demise.

No.13 seed Andy Murray could have his work cut out for him against Mario Ancic even though Murray took out Ancic in straights earlier this year in Marseille. But ya never know which Murray is going to show up and Ancic was previously a top-ten player. He could pose a problem, but Murray should win.

No. 5 seed David Ferrer could also be an early casualty going up against the veteran Thomas Johansson. Ordinarily I would consider Ferrer a lock against Johansson, but this is a game of confidence, and Ferrer may not be as confident as he would like. Then again, Johansson hasn’t done much this year either, so chances are Ferrer will pull it out.

The juicy contests should begin next round, so stay tuned. Game, set, match…
