I just received my December issue of “German Life” magazine. Among the articles about Christkindlmarkt, feather Christmas trees, cookies, and sausages, I read again about the Pennsylvania German art of Fraktur. I have always been fascinated with this art form that evokes the ancient illuminated manuscripts in its own unique and unschooled way.
The artwork in “German Life” shows how Fraktur celebrates and documents marriages and births using simple bright colors and repeated motifs of birds and flowers. Angels, tulips, trees, and hearts also show up frequently. Surprisingly, parrots are a popular theme.
What strikes me is the tireless passion artists possess for painting the beauty of the world around us, and how we continue through the ages to celebrate what moves us spiritually with motifs of flowers, fruits, and birds.
