On December 13th, 2006, Sidney Crosby took over the scoring lead in the NHL and he may never let it go. Who knows, he might let it go next week or it might not happen for a few more seasons.
If Crosby holds on to the lead, he will do something even the great Wayne Gretzky could not accomplish: win the scoring title as a teenager. Even as a huge Gretzky fan, I truly hope Crosby does win the Art Ross, I think it would be great for the NHL. Gretzky and Crosby will always be compared to each other for years to come, and I am looking forward to seeing how Crosby can stack up. He is averaging 1.79 points per game so far this season (52 points through 29 games) - if you extract that over an 82-game season, Crosby would have 147 points. That would be highest total in over 10 years, since his mentor Mario Lemieux tallied 161 points in 1995-96.
Crosby has missed some games this year, so he won't play all 82, but his point total at the end of this season will be something spectacular I'm sure.
Wayne Gretzky officially won his first scoring title at the ripe old age of 20 - he then won the title six times in a row and nine of the next 10 - something I highly doubt Crosby can do. However, as Sid the Kid is proving, you can never underestimate him.
